Methodology

Parenting Docs helps separated parents communicate effectively.

Parenting Docs uses evidence-based communication strategies to help separated and divorced parents communicate effectively about co-parenting. Our AI coach is designed to reduce conflict, keep communication child-focused, and ensure all messages are court-appropriate.

Core Principles

  • Child-Focused: Every message prioritizes the children’s well-being and keeps the focus on their needs.
  • Emotionally Neutral: Messages avoid blame, defensiveness, and emotional reactions that escalate conflict.
  • Brief and Clear: Communication is concise (typically 1-3 sentences) to reduce misunderstandings and keep interactions professional.
  • Court-Safe: All suggested messages are appropriate for court review and help build a positive communication record.
  • Solution-Focused: Emphasis on moving forward constructively rather than rehashing past conflicts.

Communication Strategies

Our AI coach draws from established co-parenting communication frameworks, selecting the most appropriate strategy based on your specific situation:

BIFF (Brief, Informative, Friendly, Firm)

A communication method developed by Bill Eddy specifically for high-conflict situations. BIFF responses are short, stick to facts, maintain a cordial tone, and set clear boundaries without being aggressive.

Best for: Responding to hostile or accusatory messages, setting boundaries, declining unreasonable requests.

Gray Rock

A minimal-engagement strategy that keeps responses brief and emotionally neutral, like a “gray rock”—boring and unrewarding for someone seeking conflict or drama.

Best for: Dealing with consistently provocative co-parents, avoiding engagement with manipulation attempts.

Yellow Rock

Similar to Gray Rock but slightly warmer—neutral and professional without being cold or hostile. Maintains boundaries while preserving a working relationship.

Best for: Managing tension while keeping the relationship functional, situations where cooperation is needed but trust is low.

Collaborative Co-Parenting

A cooperative approach that emphasizes shared problem-solving, mutual respect, and flexibility. Messages invite discussion and demonstrate willingness to work together.

Best for: Low-conflict relationships, planning discussions, situations where both parents are receptive to collaboration.

Nonviolent Communication (NVC)

Developed by Marshall Rosenberg, NVC focuses on expressing observations, feelings, needs, and requests without judgment or blame. It helps de-escalate tension through empathetic communication.

Best for: Addressing sensitive topics, making requests without demands, situations requiring understanding and empathy.

Parallel Parenting

A strategy for high-conflict situations where parents minimize direct contact and communication. Messages are strictly focused on logistics with no personal commentary.

Best for: Extremely high-conflict situations, when ordered by the court, relationships where direct interaction causes harm.

Other Strategies

Our AI also incorporates principles from:

  • Boundaries: Setting clear limits without aggression
  • Solution-Focused Communication: Emphasizing “what next” rather than “what happened”
  • Active Listening: Acknowledging the other parent’s perspective before responding
  • Trauma-Informed Approaches: Avoiding triggering language and validating emotions

How It Works

When you use Parenting Docs, the AI coach follows a structured approach:

  1. Understanding Context: The AI asks clarifying questions (one at a time) to understand what happened and what you want to accomplish with your message.
  2. Strategy Selection: Based on your situation, relationship dynamic, and goals, the AI selects the most appropriate communication strategy.
  3. Message Drafting: The AI provides a single, well-crafted message that implements the chosen strategy, along with a brief explanation of why this approach works.
  4. Iterative Refinement: You can request adjustments, and the AI will revise the message until you’re satisfied.
  5. Final Output: Once approved, you receive clean, copy-paste-ready text to send to your co-parent.

What We Don’t Do

Parenting Docs is a communication tool, not a replacement for professional services:

  • Not Legal Advice: We help you communicate, but we don’t provide legal guidance. Always consult an attorney for legal matters.
  • Not Therapy: While we use trauma-informed approaches, we’re not a substitute for mental health support.
  • Not a Decision-Maker: We help you articulate your decisions, but we don’t tell you what choices to make regarding your children.
  • Not Advocacy: We don’t take sides. Our goal is effective communication that serves your children’s best interests.

Research Foundation

Our methodology is based on established research and frameworks in high-conflict communication and co-parenting:

  • Bill Eddy’s work on BIFF communication and high-conflict personalities
  • Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication principles
  • Academic research on parallel vs. cooperative co-parenting
  • Court-approved communication guidelines from family law professionals
  • Best practices from established co-parenting apps and communication platforms
